Steps to take if you are in an accident with a drunk driver

Every year, residents of Connecticut lose their lives to drunk driving. In 2017, 120 fatalities occurred from drunk driving, according to data from the National Traffic Highway Safety Administration. This is a substantial increase from the previous few years.

Many drunk driving accidents do not result in fatalities, but they can result in significant property damage and injuries. You may naturally feel shaken up after a collision of any kind, but here are the steps to take following a collision of this nature.

Cooperate with the police

You should contact the police after any kind of car accident, but it becomes even more crucial if you suspect the other driver is under the influence of alcohol. Ultimately, you want to call the cops so that the other driver does not get behind the wheel again and put other people's lives at risk. When the police arrive, they will ask you for a statement. You should provide as many facts as possible without delving into speculation. You should avoid saying you did not suffer any injuries at this point because you may have no idea what the extent of the damage is.

Collect evidence

As you wait for the police and ambulance to arrive, you need to gather evidence. This involves speaking to the drunk driver and getting his or her name and insurance information. The person may be in no state to provide these details to you, and in that case, you will need to wait for the police to get there to learn it. You should also use this time to take pictures of the damage to both vehicles as well as any visible injuries you received.

Get medical treatment

Once the police have their report, you will need to see a doctor. The adrenaline from the accident may prevent you from feeling anything, so you want to seek medical attention even if you feel all right. Seeing a doctor soon allows you to receive treatment for any injuries promptly before it becomes a chronic pain condition.
